Broken after 6 monthsNov 04, 2009 I wont buy anymore anything from Western Digital... I bought a 500GB this year in january and today it stop working.... i used it no more than 10 hours a month.
Very bad quality and the worst is that now my info is COMPLETELY LOST.
Sleazy AdvertisingNov 03, 2009 We recently purchased this drive on Amazon after reading a press release from Western Digital:
"LAKE FOREST, Calif. - Sept. 10, 2009 - WD® (NYSE: WDC), the world's leader in external storage solutions, today introduced its smaller, smarter and more secure My Passport(tm) Essential(tm) and My Passport for Mac® ultra-portable external hard drives featuring WD's new WD SmartWare(tm) software and equipped with hardware-based encryption. The new My Passport drives are more than 20 percent smaller than the previous generation My Passport."
We incorrectly assumed that a product named "Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive" would not be anything different from the one advertised in the press release. Turns out there was a previous model ( with the same name and appearance ) that doesn't support hardware encryption -- the whole reason we bought the drive. After an hour on the phone with tech support they admitted that the different between the old/new drives is a change in a 10+ digit model number and a slight change in the case appearance ( although I challenge you to detect that from the two different pictures on the Amazon site ). Unfortunately both versions of the product are floating around...you *must* be careful to get the newer drive by making sure its model number is WDBAAA5000ABK and *NOT* WDME5000TN. They are even the same price. Check out the two products and see if you can immediately spot the huge difference in functionality!:

It's so sleazy of WD to make such a large feature change and not make the distinction between the new and the old products clear. What a bunch of red tape it requires from the consumers who care about the difference...while leaving others in the dark.
For lack of information, not what I was looking forNov 03, 2009 I purchased the WD external HD to sync desktop and laptop, both 64 bits. I expected to do it through the WD Sync supplied app. I found no documentation so I asked their customer service for help. They replied "Unfortunately the WD Sync utility is not compatible with 64-bit OS's at this time". This was in October 2009!!! I tried to go through the hassle of manual copy and paste, but the poor transfer rate made me drop the idea. For my intended purpose (sync) the equipment is worthless.
too much space taken by operating system?Nov 01, 2009 Even after reformating this drive there are 73gb (with a G) of space used/unavaliable to me. That is almost 25% of the advertised space. I have been unsuccessful in finding out how to shrink this down to a reasonable size. Other than that, its a great device.
Pay a little extra for the 500GB versionNov 01, 2009 I'm using this drive for my Apple Mac Time Machine backups and I only have about 75GB spare right now. If you've got a little spare cash, I'd really recommend paying the extra for the 500GB version of this product - see Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black)
