2Was good while it was workingNov 20, 2009
I've used this drive as a time machine for Mac. It died after 11 months.

5breathe easierNov 08, 2009
I needed an external hard drive to back up my large image files that was easy to install, quick, and would do it's job without my having to remember to do it. This HD works seamlessly with Time Machine and was perfect for my iMac.

1Stopped functioning constantly, then died - even after warranty replacement!!Nov 05, 2009
I used this with time machine on my iMac. I think the sleep function on the iMac unmounts the drive, because almost every time I needed to back up, this drive was unresponsive. I was always having to cycle the power and mess with it to get it to be recognized by OS X. The first one I bought just stopped working all together after a month. I returned it on the factory warranty (which went smoothly by the way), and used the second one for a year before it decided to die on me. I could've replaced it again on the warranty, but who wants to use an unreliable drive for backup???! I wasted my money on this drive and I'll never buy a WD external drive again. I got a seagate freeAgent, and it seems to be exactly what I wanted in the first place - a trouble free external drive with firewire 800.

5Works Wonderfully with Snow Leopard & Time MachineOct 01, 2009
Truly a plug and play external hard drive for Mac. From the time I opened the box to the time I started backing up with Time Machine couldn't have bee more than 5 minutes, including time to unwrap all the cables and route power nicely under my desk.

I haven't used it for anything other than simply backing up via Time Machine and, fortunately, I haven't had a reason to need to get anything off of it yet. But, so far, so good.

3Runs HOT, noisySep 02, 2009
Works fine with my mac right out of the box, but this HD runs HOT whether or not it's in use. It sits next to a black WD My Book Essential, which is nearly constantly in use, but never gets more than slightly warm - yet the Studio runs hot even when it's ejected and supposedly powered down! I'm really not too confident in this thing's lifespan if it's always sitting there cooking even when it's not in use.

It's also a pretty loud drive when it spins up - [...] - while its "Essential" partner is always quiet.
