External firewire driveNov 08, 2009 I had a problem with the drive on my Mac dual g5. It would not stay mounted on the desk top. I called for help and was forwarded to level 2 support when the first level support could not help. The problem seem to be resolved by plugging the power transformer directly into the wall outlet rather then into a power strip. I think that they should supply a power transformer that is more robust. Other drives work fine with the power strip I used. The documentation on the drivers is nonexistent. The transfers on firewire 800 are fast and work well.

Started dropping the connection after 2 weeks...Nov 06, 2009 I have a lot of Western Digital external drives and among them (4) 2TB My Book Studios which are the bigger brothers of this drive. They all work well.
This 1TB drive, for whatever reason drops the connection on both USB and FireWire. I tried on at least 3 computers before I returned it. It also screwed one machine pretty bad. After the connection was dropped, at the next reboot the machine would not recognize the keyboard anymore. I could not even get to the BIOS. After 2 hours of troubleshooting, the only solution was to open it and reset the CMOS settings with the jumper....
Lost all 800 GB of data on the drive but luckily I had a tape backup of it...
Very disappointed in this... Not recommended...

The definitive Time Machine driveNov 06, 2009 While shopping for the best backup drive for my iMac I read many reviews. I was originally going for the Time Capsule but discovered that many users encountered a serious flaw in the design that causes the drive to crash after about 18 months. So I looked far and wide and the one drive that kept coming back with the most favorable reviews was the WD My Book Studio. The reviews are accurate. This device is sleek and fast and the price is right. And, oh yeah, it has a 5 year warranty - enough said.

Perfect backup Harddrive at the right priceNov 03, 2009 I have a Mac and was very pleased it was ready to use out of the box. I partitioned it so I could have some space for extra storage and the rest for Timemachine backups and it took all of 2 minutes to do this. I am using Firewire 800 and was impressed it backed up my 250 GB hard drive on my computer in 3 hours or so. I can't comment on reliability yet as I haven't had it long, but you typically can't go wrong with Western Digital. I liked also that it has esata although I don't have a card in my laptop for that, but it's a good option for the future. I also like the auto shut off so that it's not using electricity when it's not in use. Great product and great value.

Not reliableOct 29, 2009 They work good for a little while then they just don't. I bought an Apple Time capsule instead and haven't had any problems. This drive as stated "was" good but then began to vanish from my mac/windows desktop and would stay off after start up. They are beginning to become problematic and shut off when they please. Thus far I have had 3 of these fail within a year, totally dead with minimum, light use. I have the Time capsule now, but I will also be looking for a better external drive. The price they charge for these units and how many of them are built with garbage is criminal.
