5Fast, Quiet, Runs Cool, and has PATA InterfaceNov 22, 2009
I purchased this drive to replace the 7200 RPM Hitachi 80 GB drive that originally came on an aging IBM Thinkpad. I am happy with the product. Compared to the original hard drive, it is very quiet, runs much cooler, and despite its slower 5400 RPM rating has a very noticeably faster data transfer rate (which I attribute to higher data densities).

Installation was easy with the help of a Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter, also from Amazon (highly recommended, despite poor manual), the free for personal use DriveImg XML software, and another PC I borrowed. I removed the original drive from the Thinkpad, attached it to the other PC via the Vantec USB adapter, copied the contents to that PC via DriveImg XML, deattached the old drive from the borrowed PC, attached the new Western Digital drive to that PC via the Vantec USB adapter, partititioned the new Western Digital drive (still on the borrowed PC) with the Windows XP disk manager ( Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management), and used DriveImg XML to copy the data I had temporarily stored in the borrowed PC to an appropriate partition in the new Western Digital drive. I then marked that partition as "active" in the XP disk manager.

At that point I deattached the new Western Digital drive from the borrowed PC and the Vantec USB adapter, installed it on the Thinkpad I was upgrading, turned on the power switch and....things worked just fine and have worked just fine for several months.

Given I am happy with the drive, that I need another external USB drive for backups, and that it is difficult to find big PATA drives, I'll order another one and use it as an external USB drive for backups via the Vantec adapter. Like that I'll have a spare PATA drive just in case I need it.

5Great Hard Disk Download the WD Software First!Nov 21, 2009
My 04 IBM Thinkpad came with a small drive and I wanted to go from 40gb to something larger. This WD Scorpio Blue is simply fantastic. Before you begin to build go to the WD web support and download the software available Acronis True Image! It made everything very simple to handle.

A simple disk swap then adding the original drive on an adapter for the UltraSlim Bay allowed me to prep the drive and then mirror the image of the original to the replacement. Removed the original setup the boot order in the bios and that is it! Up and running with the system finding 214gb of drive now available.

The software is the key to a quick hassle free install.

Now as an aside:

AMAZON Read This! Your shipping has become erratic and unreliable! I order a 250gb WD Scorpio Blue SATA and it came doubled boxed with nice cardboard inserts to hold the drive securely and I praised the packaging

I ordered a 250gb WD Scorpio Blue PATA and it comes in an un-taped single box that obviously came open and was damaged with the drive tossed back in it sideways. Did not know how to set it into the cardboard sleeves I guess nor a piece of tape available at the whole warehouse!

So far the drive is working but you have to wonder what happened to this small highly breakable electronics in shipping. These small drives can be ruined by twisting them alone!

5Just as advertisedNov 20, 2009
This WD drive replaced a 7,200-RPM 60GB drive in a 5-year old Toshiba notebook. I used a USB-IDE adapter and Norton Ghost to copy the old disk to the new. No problems of any kind and the new drive seems to be faster than the old one.

5Older PowerBook Mac Internal Drive 320gbNov 19, 2009
This Western Digital PATA-IDE 320GB DRIVE works great in my Powerbook 1.67mhz, G4, Mac os10.4
It was easy to install, runs quiet, fast, no issues. Thumbs UP.
This was the largest drive I could find for my old Mac, Running OSX-10.4 that was PATA.

1Dead !! - TwiceNov 10, 2009
I ordered this drive in an attempt to increase my laptop storage space. It was an easy install. I formatted the drive and installed the OS without difficulty. I had the hard drive crash 2 days later. I re installed the OS and had the same thing happen that day. I returned the drive to Amazon and requested a replacement. To Amazon's credit, it was a hassle free return. The replacement drive was dead on arrival. I returned the drive for a refund. I reinstalled the original drive and it has been working like a champ .. all 40 GB.
