Amazon.com needs to improve their packaging!Nov 06, 2009 I can't believe how Amazon packaged this hard drive. It arrived surrounded in a thin layer of bubble wrap, placed in a slightly larger box. I'm installing it in my Mac Pro for now, and will come back to this review if it fails in the near future.
DOANov 06, 2009 Dead on Arrival! The shipping box and lack of packing material was just not up to the job. I was a little suspicious when I heard the slight rattle as I installed it in my Power Mac G5. Then came the ominous "tic..tic...tic", silence, then "tic...tic" of a drive that is dead. After numerous attempts to revive it and use any form of utility to read it I finally gave up and carefully placed it in the bin! My father once told me 'if you pay peanuts you get monkeys!"
Do not buy Western DigitalNov 05, 2009 If the product breaks they will not replace it. No one at their call center speaks English. I lost a lot of data because of this company. Do not buy from them!!!
So far it has not crapped out...Nov 05, 2009 What can you really say about a drive when it is all working as expected? That's a good thing I say, no complaints, no problems, seems quite, never notice it running. As for what other's have said, the packaging from Amazon is a little questionable, but in the end, all worked out fine.

Great Drive, Poor PackagingNov 04, 2009
I've been purchasing (1 & 2 TB) WD green drives through Amazon for some time now for my Drobos and have been very satisfied with their performance and speed. There is a slight performance hit if the drive is accessed when the drives have spun down but that's the whole point of the green drive is to save on power consumption while keeping the internal temp low.
What forced me to provide this review was the poor packaging for this drive.
This OEM drive is part of the Amazon Frustration Free packaging program. Every green drive I purchased in the past had the OEM drive in its anti-static wrap, wrapped in bubble wrap, then enclosed in a small box that is lined with egg crate foam. That box is then in another box with air pads. This was fine for me as there is very little free movement for the drive and I've had no physical problems with the drives.
What's wrong now, and you'll find several reviews siting similar situations, is that there is no egg foam box. All it is is a small box, with two air pads, and the drive in a single layer bubble wrap. The drive is loose and free to bang up against the box. The box suffered a little damage on one corner, either due to having something heavy stacked or from a fall.
I'm no expert -- maybe it's perfectly fine to ship it this way, but the tech geek in me is having a difficult time with this.
The drive is going into the drobo, so if it does fail I'm not overly worried. If it does, it's difficult to ignore the poor packaging as having a hand in the cause.
