These features come together to provide smooth tape recording that delivers superb results--Sony quality sound. Features - 160 kHz super bias circuitry
- High-speed fast forward and rewind
- Three-head design: with separate, individually optimized heads for erase, record, and play; promotes wide frequency response, extended dynamic range
- Record monitoring: lets you check the sound quality of your tape as you record
- Linear counter of minutes and seconds
- Three heads with tape monitoring
- Ultra-stable two-motor transport
- Ceramic cassette holder
- Full-logic, feather-touch transport controls
- Automatic monitor switch: with indicator assists you by automatically selecting "tape" when you enter the play mode
- Dolby B and C noise reduction
- Ultra-stable, two-motor transport: for superb smoothness, reduced wow and flutter
- Dolby S-type noise reduction: minimizes noise, distortion, and high-frequency compression; lowers mid-frequency noise by 24 dB; is extremely compatible with car and portable cassette players equipped with Dolby B NR
- Sorbothane cassette stabilizer
- Dolby B and C noise reduction
- Switchable MPX filter
- Dolby HX Pro: headroom extension varies bias level for crisper, more impactful highs
- Dolby HX Pro circuitry
- Bias and record calibration: with built-in oscillator adjusts the recording parameters to match any specific tape
- 160 kHz super bias electronics: reduces bias-induced beat frequencies, promotes extended high-frequency response
- Ultra-stable two-motor tape transport
- FET playback amplifier: for extremely linear response, extremely low distortion
- Mid-ship drive: reduces chassis flexing; places the drive between the power supply and the audio circuits to reduce radiated noise
- Sorbothane cassette stabilizer: reduces the spread of vibration through the cassette shell
- Ceramic cassette holder: resists resonance
- High-density Permalloy record and playback heads: for high maximum flux density, wide dynamic range
- Switchable MPX filter: blocks the 19 kHz multiplex pilot tone of FM stereo broadcasts for proper Dolby NR tracking when you record off the air
- Full-logic, feather-touch transport controls: respond to even slight finger contact; full logic lets you go directly between modes, for example, from fast-forward to rewind, without first pressing play
- Linear time counter: of minutes and seconds with counter memory
- Multiple AMS track search: lets you automatically skip up to 9 tracks forward or back

Great recorder for "control freaks"Jul 16, 2006 I purchased this machine 3 years ago, but it is not used a lot. However, this machine has several features that are very hard to find on any audio cassette recorder:
1. Manual control of recording levels ("balance" knob for independant channel control)
2. Several level LED indicators that make fine adjustments to levels very easy.
3. Three (3) heads that allow for monitor of playback during recording, as well as source monitor.
3. Manual bias setting procedure.
While I use an external DBX compansion unit (2:1)exclusively for this unit (to compensate for the poor audio quality of audio cassettes) the machine provides good quality audio using none or one of the provided noise reduction methods. There is no auto direction change; the cassette must be manually turned over to play or record the next side of the cassette--BUT THAT CAN BE A GOOD THING, as many of those auto "head turners" often get out of alignment after prolonged use. This is NOT a machine for a non-techie who just wants to close the cassette door and record (remember, no auto level). This is a manchine for those who understand that not all sources are equal, and that you are attempting to record the best possible signal by having control of as many elements as possible. I do recommend this recorder if you can still find it. It is unfortunate that it is not a dual deck.
