Great for making your own DVDsApr 21, 2009 I have owned one of these for several years now and have mixed feelings about this product.
Pros:
- Free TV-Guide
- Can burn DVDs from the hard drive
- Good sized hard drive
- Can edit recored videos
Cons:
- U99 errors
- Unreliable TV-Guide data
- Feels a little buggy
The DMR-E95HS uses the free over the air TVGOS which, when working, is great for the price. The TV-Guide data is sent over a PBS channel several times a day. There are times when the TV-guide data becomes unavailable. I'm not sure if this is due to the cable provider or the PBS station... but when it happens there really isn't anyone to call for help.
Several times I found the TV-Guide data to just be wrong. Not often, but when it does happen it is frustrating. To receive the data, the system needs to be turned off (this isn't like TiVo where it is always on).
The interface is OK. It is nice that it lets you do simple editing of the recordings. Just things like split and remove commercials... don't expect to add fades or animated titles or anything like that. I use this to make DVDs of my kids favorite shows (w/o commercials) that we can take on the rode for long trips. For that purpose, it is a great machine.
The TV-Guide lets you pick a show and schedule repeating recordings of that show... that is to say, the same channel and time weekly, daily or weekdays. It is smart enough not to record that channel if the show is not being aired, but not smart enough to automatically record the same show running on a different channel and/or time. It does not auto-delete recordings to make room on the disk.
There are some things that don't work right. Dividing titles will sometimes lock up the system. There is a condition that leads to a "U99" error (look it up for more discussion) which can be very frustrating... but eventually (weeks later) seems to go away. For some reason, some recordings just don't run... for no reason that I can tell (i.e. no conflicts).
For the price of a used one, I think you could do much better with a TiVo and burn the DVDs on your PC. But I am still happy that I bought it when I did.
Nothing is perfect, but this has been pretty darn good.Apr 19, 2009 I bought my DMR e95h a long time ago, from a different source. My wife just leaves the room when I play with my tech toys. Her delicate ears can't take the abuse I heap on a unit that won't do as it's told. I expect a lot of my equipment and I have little patience for items that don't perform as expected. Nothing is perfect and I have had my share of disappointing moments with this DVR, but all-in-all it has been a pretty good unit.
Panasonic customer "service" can be totally useless at times, but if you try a few times you can usually eventually get someone that actually knows what he is doing. I find this is true of most Customer Service units for most suppliers. About 2 in 10 techs are actually qualified to do their jobs. Panasonic seems no better or worse than the usual. ( wanna see real customer DISservice... deal with NetGear - jeez!!! )
I AM a bit ticked off about the TVGuide service being blocked by Cox Cable. I wish the unit had a tuner of it's own along with the IR Blaster that controls the Cable box. I wish I could download the data to an external drive or upgrade to a larger drive. But the unit has performed admirably and reliably for years and when it failed a few calls and emails to Panasonic eventually got it fixed and back on line.
It has been well worth the $500 I paid for it.
panasonic dvrDec 29, 2007 I purchased one of the first panasonic dvr with the lifetime membership. When the HD went out and replaced, it was a expensive repair. The second one quit. My son replaced the HD and opening the unit found the HD encased with foam. Overheating????? yes! Programing soon became a problem. Panasonic support is terrible. I would never buy a panasonic product again.
Had a comcast dvr, not a good product. Called Comcast regarding using TiVo with the cards that need to be installed and they said I had to upgrade my services. Called TIVO, you do not need to upgrade and they will do a 3way call with comcast when you set up your unit for the cards. MJS

The Pansonic POS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Apr 26, 2007 This thing sucks. there is little else to say other than there is a class action lawsuit somewhere here. PANASONIC this is FRAUD!!!!! Or outright robbery. No support. Does NOT work. I say anyone who has had success with this unit is probably lying or a plant from panasonic. Errors all the time and never loads the TV Guide BS. Just a giant waste of money!!! If there were an option for no stars I would have used that. Amazon should not even be selling this. It is not fair to loyal customers.

Can't believe it!Mar 11, 2007 If the description here is correct, this set is completely crippled compared to other Panazonic models. It is said it will only read DVD -R written on other Panasonic recorders (!!!) and that it can only write to and read DVD -R. Panasonic used to make recorders limited to writing DVD -R, but since then has produced sets that can write to DVD -R DVD + R and DVD -RW. Why the jump backwards? I've never heard of any model that can only read DVD -R produced by recorders only of the same brand. This is absurd!
The price listed is also about double wha it should be.
Add all this to the other complaints and it's avoid at all costs.
I incidentally own a Panasonic with a 80 GB hard disk and have recorded many hundreds of hours to the HD and made hundreds of DVDs without a problem.
Anyway, I wouldn't buy ANY DVD recorder now unless it has an ATSC tuner included. Otherwise it becomes obsolete in two years when analogue TV is supposed to disappear.
Manufacturers, including Panasonic, are making sets with the digital tuners for the European market. Why not in the USA?
