It works - keeps wine palatable even on warm summer daysJul 25, 2009 Yes, you should read the directions, but why wouldn't you. Pull the black pin and it only takes a few pumps. I forgot there was a good red in there and two days later gave it a try. It was judged to still be fine. I'm about to purchase another as a gift.

Don't waste your moneyJun 20, 2009 Forget this product. Are you serious? 20 pumps to create a vacuum? And there is still development of condensation. I wish i could return the product and get my money back. Oh well, that's the last time I will pay attention to Amazon reviews, which I suspect are written by company representative of the product.
Metrokane V1 is great, once you figure out how to use it!Mar 02, 2009 My husband and I received this as a gift over a year ago, back in the days when we rarely had any wine left over, so we have just now started to use it. Roughly a month ago, we easily vacuum-sealed a half bottle of a nice Pinot. Then, having thrown the box away, we could not figure out how to UNseal it. Many fruitless and amusing attempts later, I finally googled it, using only the arcane "V1" on the vacuum pump. Success! Unsealing is as simple as PULLING the button, which apparently never occurred to us. Though the color has gone off slightly, the wine is perfectly drinkable --- not at its prime, but very drinkable. I am imagining that if we use the product as intended, and drink the vacuum-sealed wine within a week, there will be no noticeable deterioration at all.
A gimmickDec 23, 2008 The whole point of having a decanter is to aerate the wine, not to preserve it in a vacuum. Since not all wines need decanting, but all of them could use a vacuum stopper to preserve any unfinished wine, it makes much more sense to just get a regular decanter and some vacuum stoppers (Metrokane or Houdini stoppers are fine) instead of this vacuum decanter.
Still working after at least 5 bottles of wineNov 23, 2008 I purchased this decanter from another seller (not through Amazon) and it came with the 2 piece Metrokane Wine Shower Funnel.
I quite enjoy using this combination and have had great success with the V1. It did take a few minutes to figure out that the center stem has to be pulled up on the stopper prior to pumping a vacuum on the decanter but I haven't had any trouble since.
Since I am the only wine drinker in the house, and like to have a daily glass, keeping my wine fresh was a bit tricky. But now I can decant a bottle, have a glass imediately, save the rest for another day and have it taste just a nice as it did on the first day. So I have used the pump considerably and not had any problems with it nor do I experience any difficulty removing the stopper from the decanter. The vacuum on the decanter has remained for about 2-3 days until I released it to have another glass.
Metrokane does not mention, on the V1 packaging, any type of cleaning process but the Amazon Product Features does say "Wash decanter by hand" so I guess I'll need to purchase a decanter brush. I was hoping it was dish washer safe but it doesn't appear to be recommended.
So, if I were to fault this product at all, like other reviewers I would say that Metrokane's packaging instructions need to be expanded on.
I am very happy with this product and plan to give it for Christmas gifts.
