1Not a good choiceNov 10, 2009
This was the third Krups espresso maker I've owned. First a steam machine that lasted several years, then the previous version of this machine that lasted 6 or 7 years. I bought this model and the first one didn't make steam at all. When I called Krups they were less than helpful, offering only to send a new rubber tip, which I had repeatedly told them was not the problem. The rubber tip came eight weeks later. In the meantime I contacted Amazon and asked them for exchange, which they did. That second machine worked for about nine months before hot water started pumping out of the AC switch, the selector switch and the corner of the upper body. Krups told me to send it at my expense to a service center for warranty and when I called the center a month later they actually laughed when I seemed to think they might have already opened it. Another month later several calls to the machine at the service center yielded no return call. I contacted Krups and after a week they called to say that the repair center couldn't get a part, so they were sending me a new machine (#3). A couple months later another one showed up, apparently a duplication on their part. I hesitated to send it back, and set it aside so as to see how #3 worked. Not for long. #3 started leaking hot water during the brewing process from above the filter basket holder, not at the gasket but from inside the machine. I got out #4, which functioned normally for about six weeks, and then the selector switch apparantly shorted out with the pump running, so that if it's on it's pumping. Now I'm back to using #3 and deflecting the leaking water with a spoon so that I can get a not so good shot of espresso. Needless to say, I'm done with Krups anything!

5Excellent purchaseOct 24, 2009
We purchased this machine to replace an old Krups steam espesso machine (that lasted 13 years), and thus far, we have been very pleased with our purchase. For the past two months that we have owned the machine, it has been used several times a day without any problems whatsover. We have not had any issues with the milk frother either, but we do clean it in fresh water after every single use.

This machine does take a bit of getting used to initially, and we quickly learned that you need to be patient and wait a minute or so for the orange light to turn off before expecting anything to happen, whether that be brewing or frothing milk. Also, you need to let the steam build (again until the orange light shuts off) before using the machine to froth milk.

Other reviewers have complained about gaskets needing replacement. What gaskets? They may have incorrectly reviewed the wrong model, especially if they are claiming they paid $70 for it. This unit does not retail for less than $100.00 in any store I have seen online or locally, and I have done extensive research. After completely reading the instructions, doing online research, and inspecting the machine, we did not locate any gaskets at all. This is not like a steam unit, where the gasket is located on the lid where you fill the water.

Overall, this is an excellent machine if you are looking for a pump espresso machine, but don't want to spend a huge amount of money. It works very well, makes great espresso, and looks nice in any kitchen.

This machine is a good investment. Low maintenance, great espresso, and easy to clean. The drip tray has a nifty blue float that comes up to warn of a pending spill. Brushed stainless face is clean and orderly, and the lever is of a sturdy construction. A handle mounted grounds container means no removal of inner grinding gear or other mechanisms in more complex devices that are prone to failure and are a maintenance nightmare. Furthermore, it can be used to heat water for mac and cheese, ramen, etc. Perfect for college students.

Ok for a starter machine...purchased on ebay for $70. The frother blows off just about every time I turn on the steam. It takes about 2-3 minutes from pulling shots to frothing. Looking to upgrade now that I know what I like/don't like in these machines.

2Avoid This MachineSep 20, 2009
My problems with this machine are not related to the quality of the beverage it can make. Although, the steam wand doesn't froth all that great, it can be made to function sufficiently and the espresso output tastes good and makes a good cappuccino. The problem is the quality of the machine construction itself. I can verify that the steam want nozzle CAN shoot off as described. After fiddling with it to examine it (taking off the unit, which is only held on by friction), it did shoot off at high velocity the next time I used it. However, after reattaching it a second time, it never did it again. However, within a month or so, the selector switch started to feel a little bit "loose". The large "screw" in the center of the knob was as tight as it could possibly be (I'm not even certain it is a screw at all it's so tight). But never-the-less, over the next three months, it slowly felt looser and looser. The machine, however continued to make good beverages. Then, yesterday, the knob simply popped outward a bit and is now so loose that it will only turn the selector switch inside if it's held tightly against the unit; otherwise it pops out of place and does nothing. For the life of me, I cannot tell what is supposed to hold this switch in place. As I said, the screw-like object in the center of the knob is tight and does not budge (and appears to be a non-standard connector). I'm not sure how the selector is supposed to be secured, but it appears to either be a friction/pop-on fit or it's secured from behind. I attempted to take the unit apart to see if I could secure the switch from the back side, but thus far I cannot figure out how to even get to the switch. I've got half the back and bottom apart and there appears to be no easy way to get to the switch to even see if it can be secured.

The bottom line is like so many products today, this item is made in Communist China and it is unreliable. I see no separation between the two. Most products today seem to be made poorly and the fact that nearly all are now made in China bears mentioning again. Most countries and corporations have sold their souls for pure greed and moved their operations to China to make huge profits from near slave labor rates. And we the consumer have paid the price with cheaply made junk that usually doesn't last a year. Prices are not lower as a result; profits are simply higher for the companies involved. We lose jobs and we get shoddy products in return.

This particular product is clealrly defective on arrival for most people. The friction fit frother wand is unreliable and unsecured. The selector knob is cheaply made and not secured and there is nothing reasonable a person can do to secure it. Do yourself a favor and find another model. I'm looking too and it looks pretty bleak out there. From a Mr. Coffee model that gets good reviews EXCEPT for the fact that they all seem to leak water (how could quality/control overlook such a basic flaw except that there is no quality/control) to multi-hundred dollar models that don't appear to be any more reliable. I do know that I'm not saving money on cappuccinos if I have to replace my machine every four months.
