It measures just 6 inches wide, 10-1/2 inches high, and 9 inches deep. On top of the machine is a button for choosing brewing or shutting the pump off so that a steaming/frothing dial on the side can be engaged. There's a steam nozzle for heating milk, hot chocolate, tea, and soup. A frothing attachment fits onto the nozzle for making cappuccinos or topping off café lattés. An indicator light goes out when proper water temperatures have been reached for brewing or frothing/steaming. The machine brews either one or two cups of espresso at once, depending on which of two filters (included) is placed into the filter holder and how much coffee is tamped into a filter with a coffee scoop/tamping tool (also included). The 32-ounce water tank can be lifted out for convenient filling. The machine is clad in matte-black plastic for easy cleanup and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack | | | Features: | |

learning curveNov 27, 2003 I had many of the same problems mentioned in previous reviews and was ready to give up and get another espresso maker but kept tinkering. Now I am able to get a perfect crema shot everytime. This machine is not very forgiving. But if you can get the hang of it you can get a great cup of crema without spending $200 for the next level up in pump espresso makers. Maybe this is the case with all of them. I do not have experience with other brands. The secret was the grind of coffee, the amount in the portafilter and proper tamping. I did not have a grinder before last week and just ordered "espresso grind" from local coffee shop. This was too course. I now use 3.5 setting on a Capresso Burr Grinder which does the trick. BTW. YOu will not be able to grind fine enough with a blade grinder. Specifically ask for pump espresso grind if you buy coffee ground. A Coffee Shop in North Beach SF knew the difference. I bought a metal tamper from William Sonoma that makes it much easier to evenly tamp grinds. The pressure is firm but not too hard. There is a delicate balance between the grind and amount of pressure to tamp with this machine to get a perfect cup. Do not fill the portafilter to the very top. It is important to leave about 2-3mm space. As with all espresso machines, cup must be prewarmed before using. I run hot water over demi tasse before filling with espresso. Otherwise relatively small amount of hot liquid in a cold cup gives you tepid espresso.
Can't beat it for the money...Sep 08, 2003 I have used mine now for over a year. I use it every day. It makes a great cup of espresso or cappucino. It does take a little learning. If you follow the instructions in the manual you will be able to do it perfect probably on the first try.Mechanically ... after a year it has begun to leak from the steam nozzle, but other than that continues to perform faithfully.

Disappointing....Aug 09, 2003 Being italian, I really wanted to taste a good espresso at home. After 2 years of using it on daily base and with a real italian coffee for espresso makers, it is leaking. I don't really know if I abused it or it is just not good enough. What I know is that even the cheapest espresso maker in Italy would last longer (20 cups/day in italy versus 1 cup/day). Bottom line: today we can find for the same price coffee makers with better quality (15 bars, for example), still we don't know for how long they will survive

too complicatedJul 08, 2003 I ordered this espresso maker when my tried-and-true Krups basic espresso maker (Type 871) finally broke after more than 8 years of daily use. This machine -- the Gusto -- was way too complicated for me. You need to stand by the machine and turn buttons on and off and time everything perfectly to make a basic cup of cappuccino. Who has the time or patience for that in the morning? I sent it back and got another Type 871.

...Apr 30, 2003 This machine can produce fair to good drinks (compared to the great Italians). I live in coffee house land, but none really have what it takes to make a fine espresso. So if you can get better espresso in your neighborhood, then why spend money on anything less? For me, a one or two shot gal, I think the machine is a deal for the money... It's a machine for someone like me who needs a shot when I'm still in my pjs. ... I was missing the steamer container, glass receptacle, easy foam attachment, the user manual, and both filters. Experimenting with water, I figured out how to use this machine properly in about 10 minutes. Then I went online and read reviews. Lots of love-it or hate-it reviews posted for this machine. ... The special filters are a little messy, but are made with a lip that keeps the pressure correct when drawing a shot. If you are going to have a tantrum about getting the filter clean between pouring several drinks, order extras or get a different machine. Grind your favorite beans very fine and you will have no trouble getting a nice creamy top on your shot. ...
