This device is truely plug-n-play...just plug to your computer, upload all your pictures and video files, hook it up to the TV and watch your favorite movies and pictures at HD...where available. :)

Easy To UseMay 11, 2009
The IOgear GMD2025u120 is very easy to use. I bought mine for using in place of the DVD collection. The kids were just tearing them up, especialing when taking DVD's on trips. I haven't actually used the player on a trip but I have tried it out in the drive way with an extension cord to power the player. It worked just fine. It connects to a tv just like a DVD player or vcr. I haven't tried connecting it to my home stereo to try it out playing mp3's. You would still need to send the video to a moniter that will accept video through an RCA type jack. The player connects to a computer with a standard USB to MP3 player type cable. You can copy a whole DVD right to the drive and it will function just like a DVD. I rip my movies to DivX or avi's they are smaller electronically and they can used by MP3 player software to be made into movies installable on the kids mp3's. Just open the media player window and drag what you want right in,the same as you would loading pictures on a CF card or thumb drive.
I have found it works best to put individual movies in their own folder. The player will read and play the first thing it sees in a folder. If you have more than one item you have to let it start and hit stop and it will return to the open folder and from there you can select what you wish to play. I wish they sold little moniters so I can get rid of the cd changers and all of the cds and just down load mp3's. I would use it as a component on a home stereo. I still need to actually listen to an mp3 on a stereo rather that on a computer or mp3 player.
It is so easy to use that over the holidays you could show up at mom's house with 60 movies and pictures of the kids all this in something that fits in one pocket.
To run it in the SUV on a long trip I need to get a a dc to ac inverter to plug in the power supply for the media player and you can run out of road before you run out of movies. You can spare a lot of damage to your DVD,s with a device like this. I like having this and I didn't pay much over 100 dollars for it on amazon. Other sites have it listed for nearly 300 dollars.
Outstanding (upgraded from 120 to 500 gb!!)Mar 15, 2009
This is one of the few products i've reviewed, that actually fully deserves 5 stars, without a doubt. Not 4.5 or 4.8. But 5 stars. Here's why.
I just received this, and started checking if it would do every little thing i bought it for. Happily, it did.
First of all. The size of this is smaller than it appears on the pictures. I plan to post a picture soon. It's actually very much like a students calculator. It fits in your pocket, which makes it very portable.
The Iogear gmd2025u120, comes with a nice case for storage and traveling. Inside you,ll find composite cables, component cables (For High definition viewing!), an ac adapter, remote control, and the iogear player.
CONNECTION
The device connects to a pc via usb cable, just like the one used commonly with digital cameras or portable hard drives. Once you plug it in, its automatically recognized as a hard drive. No driver installation required. Three folders are in the drive as default, for music, video and pictures. You can store any kind of data here just like any hard drive by the way.
VIDEO
I checked for video folder viewing and avi videos.
I transfered 4 dvd movies and avi videos.
The movies played BEAUTIFULLY. The video quality is perfect, just as its played on the dvd player, and probably even better if played upscaled in high res 720p (which i haven't checked). The player recognizes menus, languages, subtitles, and every feature supported just as if you were playing it in a standard dvd player too. The avi video playback is flawless, and it looks just as good as it does in my computer monitor.
PICTURES
I transfered a folder with family pictures, and some mpg videos. Both looked excellent. Once you click play on any picture, it starts a slideshow with the pictures (and videos) within the played folder. No music with the the slideshow thou, but thats not something i specifically needed or expected to get.
MUSIC
Music files play very well with the device, it plays a full folder, and shows track info for every file played (I think it shows title, artist and album). Theres no automatic sorting of files, so it's up to you to organize per folder. Thats the only thing i'd like this to have that it doesn't, could make me remove 0.1 points from the score.
I've just contacted Iogear. I want to remove this player's hard drive and install a bigger one in it. Say 320 gb or 500 gb sata. I plan to update this review with any info about this.
**UPDATE 1:
I just contacted Iogear online live technical support. They were very kind. The just sent me the instructions on how to remove the hard drive the player comes with. The have made it clear thou, that this will void the warranty of the product, and i would doit at my own risk. I now plan to buy a 500 gb sata II disk and install it on the player!!!!

I installed a 500 gb sata hd to this baby. Works flawlessly!. Now i have 500 gb of movies paired with an hdtv projector. Awsome kit.

The IOGEAR media player does exactly what it claims to do; it allows you to carry movies (in various formats), photos, and MP3s and display it on televisions with composite video inputs. And it does an (almost) excellent job.
PROS:
Size - This is your standard small external HD case size and is fairly light. Much smaller than previous media players which were the size of large external HD cases.
Controls - Has the controls on the actual player so you can use it even if you forget or lose the remote control.
Carry Case - It comes with its own carry case which has slots for the accessories (cables, remotes, AC adapter, USB cable)
CONS:
*** No Longer a problem *** Skips - Because it is a HD, sometimes (infrequently) as you watch a movie, it blacks out and comes back about a second later in the movie. I'm not sure if it is the HD that is used or if it has to do with the onboard processor but I've noticed this on two separate players (I returned the first one because it skipped incessantly). The replacement I got is doing a better (but not perfect) job. (- 1 star because it still skips)
Does not support WMV or iTunes (AAC/M4P) file format - If you have a large library of songs purchased on iTunes, unless you convert them to MP3, this will not play your music.
Besides that this is a great little media player to have if you're going to spend a week on vacation or go to a sleepover and have access to a TV and want to have access to some movies. This is also good to have on Deployment since many locations have TVs but not a great selection of movies (This was my primary use for it).
p.s. You can also password protect a specific folder on the media player.
Here's how (only works on XP and not VISTA):
Go to the Inoi website (See comment below)
Go down to the section for the model MH720 Mobile Video Hard Disk.
Then download the Utility Program (filename is V3).
Once you download and install the software, you can plug in your IOGEAR media player and you can password protect a folder with a 4 digit code. When you want to access the hidden folder while it is plugged into the TV, input the code into the remote and the folder with your files show up as another folder on the main level.
UPDATE:
So now I've had it for a year now and the skipping has disappeared (I'm figuring it wasn't the player but rather the software I was using to convert the vob files to avi). It works GREAT and I'm still able to password protect a folder.
However, the power adapter failed after three months. I had to send it into IOGear after obtaining a RMA (I paid for shipping and insurance) and they sent me a replacement (not the same size since the new one is a bit larger but somthing that still fits into the bag).

I got this for a sweet price.
It is very easy to set up.
Quality is as good as the .avi ie movie that you d/l. Gargbage in ..garbage out.
I don't like watching movies on a PC and I don't want to burn every one I d/l. This does the job.
There are 3 folders....movies....music and pictures. I have not tried pictures yet.
The remote is ok and takes getting used to.
A reviewer noted the on/off. There is a standby but it's hard to know if it's on or off. I unplug it.
I plug it in to AC when d/ling...but I believe it works via USB if all is ok.
These units were rather expensive when they first came out. Not many reviews on them either.

Update....Sept 27/2009
I just got one for my son...xmas present....2009.
I also had a certain situation.....and Iogear resolved it. The problem situation was mine. Few companies do what they did these days.
I also bought a WD Media Player from Amazon. Why? wanted to play MKV files.
Perhaps Iogear can update s/w or include in a future unit.
