    3Great toolDec 22, 2009
I purchased the Gemini iKey Plus recorder through Amazon.com. It arrived in advance of the projected delivery date in new condition. Before I got this unit, I recorded talks a couple of times a year to a cassette tape deck connected to the monitor out of a sound board . Once I got home, I had to replay the tape via the sound card on a PC to get the talk into digital format for editing, etc. The process was very slow and I often didn't complete it. I had also played with a small Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-3100PC - which didn't provide any record level indications. The iKey unit is very handy for making recordings of talks or converting records to digital format. The "VU Meter" via the lights feature is nice to make certain you have the levels set correctly. Once recorded, it is a simple matter to copy the digital file to the PC and edit it. Any talks are also easily shared immediatly in their unedited form - just upload to the PC and share via CD, internet, etc. It is also much easier to take with me than the bulky cassette tape deck.

I haven't used the unit as much as I would like to and so need to "re-learn" how to use it each time I set it up. The setup is very straight-forward, however it can be a little confusing getting it to make a recording or being certain it is working. The indicator lights serve multiple purposes and if I haven't used it in some months and then need to record a talk and am in a hurry, I struggle with it. Other files on the USB thumb drive can interfere and sometimes it is just not clear what I have done wrong. Last time I used it I forgot the instruction manual, so only got it working after trying a couple of things and finally got it right. After that experiance, I taped basic instructions on the underside so that should help.

Because the files have generic names, I usually upload each recording or two to my PC and name them at the time. I can also quickly check them to be sure it is working correctly. I then delete them from the thumb drive so that there is no danger of running out of room - though a 2 gig drive will hold a lot of material depending upon the quality setting.

I also set it up with my turntable and used it to create a digital file from one of my records - really two files - one for each side. The process still involves using the editor to break it into individual tracks, but I didn't need to tie up my PC with the recording and could work on something else while the record played. I haven't taken the time to convert other records at this time, but hope to in the future. I would recommend the device for anyone converting records to digital or recording talks or other live audio by connecting it to the mono or stereo monitor output.

There is absolutely no justice to the cost of this product. I couldn't even use it for an hour or so before it stopped working. There are only two user interface buttons to operate this. The various combination of glowing LEDs on the instrument represent different operation mode of the instrument. It has no in built memory inspite of being so bulky. I strongly recommend people not to buy this since it is just waste of money. Digital audio recorders (Sony or Olympus) are the best bet.

2Unreliable product. Manufacturer states they do not honor warrantees from Amazon Marketplace SellersAug 15, 2009
I've owned the device for two months and had some limited success.
After reading all the favorable reviews, perhaps I was unlucky to get the lemon. With my version I have experienced the following problems:
When connecting the device to a phono-in device, i.e. a turntable direct to the iKey using the correct setting (i.e. the phono-in switch setting), I get only distortion. When connecting the device directly to my receiver using the line-in setting, things usually record OK, but with the following intermittent problems:
The device stubbornly refuses to go into recording mode until I reset the device. This is just a minor annoyance. However, lately, during the middle of a recording the recording volume suddenly drops which I don't discover until Later when I play back the recording.

I am trying to get support from the manufacture but was upset to immediately discover from their web-site where they state that they do not cover purchases through Amazon Marketplace sellers (Electronica Direct) or E-Bay, as well as several other "unauthorized" dealers:Gemini iKey Plus USB Recorder There is a link on their main page titled "Unauthorized Dealers". Electronica Direct does not warrantee the item without the original packaging or after 30 days. As a result, I am disappointed and frustrated. However, I proceeded to ask their tech-support for help and I am waiting to hear back?????

I have been using a sims voice recorder for about 6 years now to record our live music-And when its time for us to go on I dont have a lot of time to make my setup-The sims was easy and fast as well-but I found that the sims software had some glicks to it-With the ikey theres no software to mess with-And its just as fast to set up-When were done I disconect it the way the manuel said-bring it home and plug the flash drive in the computer and it comes up as a hard drive-I can have a 2 hour session in the computer in about 30 seconds-5 minutes later I can have it on a cd-Thanks for reading my review-ed in chatsworth ga

    4Must be a better wayOct 21, 2008
This recorder is very touchy. I would not recommend this is you have one shot at getting your recording. Corrupt files, no recording, and lack of online support. An overall disaster for your average user.
