ExcelentNov 01, 2009 Very good product.
Good for the world.
I used it in South America (Brasil, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina with free maps).
Buy MapSource together.
Don't need additional memory. It's better to put all the maps in the internal memory, it runs faster.
Negative: Car GPS don't save tracks.
Excellent product.
Great Guide for travelSep 05, 2009 I love, love, love, this. I nicknamed mine "Columbus". Although I still use a map as an additional backup, I cannot find gas stations, hotels, restaurants with my map. The only negative is the cost of updating maps, but, I wouldn't let that stop you from ordering such a great product.
great GPS but maps expensive and holders costlyAug 06, 2009 I have used this unit in Europe and the USA and it works very well. The voice output is difficult to hear while driving and so I bought a dash mount (basically a weighted pad with a bracket) device and a separate adapter to hold the Garmin. The adapter should really be supplied with such an expensive gadget and as important as hands free is for using a cell phone when driving it applies doubly to using a GPS.
I like the compass orientation that tells you immediately whether you are heading out in the right direction. Many areas, like the New Jersey highways, where if you start off in the wrong direction it is very difficult to get turned around and this feature is a big help. I also like the combination of a graphical display and the ability to also do a Google Maps like display where it lists the routing and distances to each street and turn that will be made. Nice to know at a glance that you will make a change in 2 miles and then again in .5 miles or not for another 20 miles. It makes it easy to know whether to stay in a lane or move around a truck and so forth which would otherwise be difficult.
Battery life is mediocre, probably due to the large color display, so having it plugged into a cigarette lighter is a good idea. It helps to dim the display and not leave it on the factory default setting.
I found that satellite acquisition was very fast though if I got off an airplane a couple thousand miles from where I last had the GPS turned on it helped to power it on outside to get its new location and not try to do so while driving in the rental car. This is where the built-in units with their roof mount antennas have an advantage though the Garmin is better in terms of being able to position it where it is easy to see the display.
The points of interest where you can enter a business name works very well though it is not even close to being current. The database was more than two years out of date when the Garmin was new so while it worked most of the time it would not bring up new businesses and would direct me to restaurants that were now closed.
Having separate base maps for Europe is important as with standard US GPS units you can buy a map for Paris but the GPS will not be able to direct you from Paris to another city even inside France. An important detail that is seldom disclosed with regard to these other GPS units.
Garmin 370 - AKA: "Jill"Aug 01, 2009 We bought this GPS Navigator before our fall 2008 trip to the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France and we took it back on our spring 2009 trip to Scotland. This device was a total lifesaver...the maps of the UK and Europe were absolutely amazing. I can't imagine traveling to Europe without a Garmin, we named "her", "Jill" because of the female voice used for directions. Once we realized how reliable "she" was we never opened our Michelin maps again. Especially useful in larger cities, where navigating can be a bit hair-raising. If you make a wrong turn, "she" very carefully gets you out of trouble and back on your way. Especially liked that the European maps were preloaded, made it a better deal from the beginning. Other useful features include Bluetooth for phone, language translator, money converter and a pedestrian function which will give walking directions from point to point...very useful in Paris and other large "walking" cities. I've updated it once on line (for free) and it's a process, just pay attention to the menus. The "package" to update the GPS is pricey at $150.+/-, so I probably won't do that often, but most places in Europe where we use it change very little.
Was a lifesaver in EuropeMay 25, 2009 We just returned from a trip to Normandy. The GPS was so helpful in getting us around. Once the road we came in on closed while there and we needed to find an alternate - the GPS got us back so efficiently. I believe it saved our trip as well as our marriage.
