LEMON--NOTHING BUT PROBLEMSAug 16, 2009 ERROR ABOVE--I ONLY GIVE IT 2 STARS!!!!!
When new-- crisp prints
CONSTANT ERROR MESSAGE AND BREAKDOWNS
I have had this printer about 4 years. Due to illness, I did not get it hooked up until after the one year warranty was over. The prints were crisp during the first cartridge, but that did not last long (just a starter cartridge). I kept getting the message "Toner Empty" when there was clearly still toner left in it. So I took it out and shook it up occasionally and it would work for a while, and then give me the message, again. I finally bought a new cartridge. After a little while--the same thing. Sometimes if I turned it off and let it cool down and turn it back on, it would then work again for awhile. Then I was getting lines in the prints. I called technical support, but nothing they said helped. I suspected that there were places to clean (due to the shaking and leaking toner), but they could not tell me where the sensor was that made this message come up. Is there an electric eye somewhere that is covered with toner? They could not tell me much of anything. There is the wire that you can clean--sometimes that helped. After I replaced the cartridge, still intermittent problems. After about 2-3 years, I found out that there is a window slit inside to clean, that helped sometimes. Then one day, it would not print at all. So I took it to an office machine repair place (no warranty and did not use the right credit card to extend the warranty). They said that I needed a new drum unit to the tune of $180. I think I paid about $200-250 for the whole printer to begin with. So, I was not going to invest this money in something that has so many problems. Cheaper to buy a new one. So, I got a new toner cartridge and, something that they had done (reset the message), made it so I could make copies, although they still had streaks (bad drum). So, I found a good quality off-brand drum unit with a new toner cartridge for about $80 to tide me over until I could find a better replacement. That new drum worked great. But after a couple of months, I again got the "Toner Empty" message. Again, shaking, etc. causing more leaking toner, etc. Finally, it will not work at all. Other issues of recent were stalling in scanning process for a couple of days and not allowing me to enter Paperport Program. Somehow, that stopped and I can now scan once again. It is still a good scanner (but can't print). But now I have to have 2 old machines available just for scanning, in case it does not work. I have to go to the library or copy store and pay 10-25 cents a copy for anything. I sue this for personal and consulting work. It has caused many problems with deadlines--almost cost me thousands of dollars for a deadline that I made by the skin of my teeth and an "all-nighter" because I could not make the copies at home, as I went along in the project. I am looking for a replacement with another brand, but cannot find a Laser all-in-one that has good scanning resolution for a reasonable price. I have a separate ink jet for photos only (but I can't hook it up yet because of space issues caused by the other 2 printers). For daily use, I have sworn off inkjets due to the number of copies I make and the numerous replacements. Brother needs to make more quality products and/or train their staff better for troubleshooting.

3 years and still running...Feb 24, 2007 I bought this machine in the summer of 2003 and I have used it ever since without any problems. I usually print out 30-50 pages per job twice a week using various kinds of paper. In all that time I have only changed the toner about three times a year but I haven't changed the drum unit not even once and I still get excellent print quality for my print and copy jobs, ranging from graphics-heavy church bulletins to letters to school assignments.
I have however given it a 4* rating because I'm disappointed with the quality of the scan jobs, especially when it comes to photos. The other problem has to do with the paper tray-it has no cover so when you leave papers in the tray for a few days while the printer is idle they get dusty and then they sometimes jam when you resume printing. I work around that by removing all the blank papers from the tray when not in use and then feeding only when I need to print. Otherwise it's a good machine and I've never had to call Tech Support.
brother copierJan 09, 2007 I use 2 of these in my small medical practice. They require very little maintenance but some problems with paper jams on the automatic feed. Good quality copies.
Good - with some drawbacksOct 27, 2006 I've liked the cost per page and good quality copies
BUT
You can not copy anything thick - the top must be closed. This was very annoying when trying to copy the bottom of a box so I could get the UPC code.
AND
It does not hold enough paper. I feel like I'm constantly loading the paper feeder.

If you buy another printer, it will be larger & more costlyApr 04, 2005 You can read all the reviews for all the other printers & compare the features or you can make the decision easy by getting this super value printer/copy/scanner & enjoy its printing quality within 12 minutes of opening the box.
I have a 2004 Compaq, Windows Home XP system. Set up was accomplished seemlessly the first time with the CD-ROM. This is the way it's supposed to happen. I opened the box, plugged the system into the computer with the USB, place the CD-ROM and followed the prompts and then set the printer as my default from the start menu and wow beautiful fast prints emerge from my command. The process took less than 12 minutes. It was so easy I did not have time to finish reading the instructions. I don't know where the other people writing these threads got their problems. The speed may not be the fastest on the market by specs, but the prints come out almost as fast as you can deal with them & as fast as the printers at work costing 10 times as much. The copy quality & ease are great and will not
disappoint you.
The initial cost & long-term cost are low. Over the next 5 years, my high quality prints will be less than $0.02 each including the cost of the printer.
Who needs a fax anymore. All you get from faxing is poor quality resolution. With email and the built in scanner all the functions that you would ever need for faxing is accomplished right here & you have the documents stored in your emials & not in a drawer. Also you don't need 2 phone lines or have the fax continually mess up your primary line. If I had a fax feature, I would not even hook it up, so why pay for a feature you don't want & could compicate the picture.
All the other machines of this quality are more exspensive to purchase and operate, are larger in size & are more complicated to run. I don't know how a home or small business could go wrong with this printer. A value priced home run.
Amazon got it to my house with standard shipping in 2 days. I am a happy customer with a product that fulfills its claims & purpose.
