good espresso, low priceNov 20, 2009 Looked for quite a while before purchasing this unit, my thing is finding the ultimate balance between cost and functionality. It has some issues: the steam wand discharges water initially. I use a cup to catch the initial water discharge before the steam gets going. This is often about a 1/4 cup and I don't want it in my milk. Another is, when pulling a double shot to two cups, the right side cup ends up with about 25-35% more liquid in it than the left after 25 seconds or so. Still another is that when timing the pull for 25-30 seconds per numerous recommendations I've read, the period from 25-30 seconds seems watery. Otherwise, the price of the Cafe Roma was good for the quality of the coffee produced once you get familiar with the quirks, and it's an attractive and seemingly durable appliance (we've had it for about six months). The milk steamer works fairly well, producing a dense foam. The pod filter is nice for a quick cup. Clean-up is relatively easy: the additional collar for the steam wand seems like an extra step, but I've gotten used to it. I should mention I bought a conical burr grinder to go with it, and the two together make some good coffee. The setting for the grind I use is between Turkish and Espresso, and have had zero problems with clogging.
Foolproof and Great LookingNov 09, 2009 Foolproof, easy to clean, good crema, efficient frothing wand system, looks great on the counter in my all stainless kitchen . All that makes this little lo-priced machine, in the scheme of gourmet espesso machines, a great bargain.
fantastic espresso machineNov 08, 2009 I love the coffee from this machine.
It is nearly perfect.
The only problem is that the single shot tray got blocked almost from the beginning, but the double one works perfectly, so no problem there.
The best coffee is the one from freshly ground coffee, the pods are not good at all ( and I have tried all kinds of brands and roastings).
Good espresso and bad foamOct 27, 2009 I agree with some of what was written by others but not all of it. Maybe it's luck of the draw, but I have made a few hundred shots of espresso with this machine and not had the filters clog up on me which others have complained about. Also if you let it heat up sufficiently, and run a little water through the unit before making your shots, you can get a good quality shot of espresso that is about 200 degrees and with a very good crema. You need to have your grind and tamping correct, but if you do you will be rewarded with a good shot. The other positives about this machine are the price (it's about as cheap as you can get and still have a pump instead of steam pressure) and the aesthetics. The bad news is that try as I might, I can't get decent foam out of this machine. I can get enough for a latte, but not really for a cappuccino. I drink mostly straight espresso or americanos so that isn't too much of an issue for me but for people that like cappucinos this may be frustrating. The filter basket is also difficult to deal with which makes it hard to make a lot of shots at once without a lot of fiddling with really hot pieces in between each batch.
Overall, if you want a machine primarily for espresso and don't want to break the bank this might be for you. I paid $100 for a used machine that was in new condition, and for me it was worth the price.
Was 4 stars now 2Oct 19, 2009 This machine worked great for 3 months. Now I have issues with steaming milk. The froth is not rich and the latte is watery. No reponse from Breville website or on phone, the customer service is quite bad.
I cleaned the steam wand and decalcified but neither of them helped. I wonder if this will get fixed. I still see steam coming but for for some reason the the latte is watery and i definetly cannot do a cappuchino with the froth i have now.
