• Native HDV transfer from camera to timeline via IEEE-1394. Frame accurate editing of your HDV 720p or 1080i material. Add any of the Liquid real-time effects to up to four streams of HDV material. Render your effects as needed to MPEG IBP. Preview your HDV timeline on your computer monitor. Easy output back to HDV tape or downconvert to standard definition for output to tape or DVD.

Excellent in Theory, but the Bugs will kill youJul 14, 2007 Notice that of all the reviews are either love or hate. Thats because the 'love' reviews are ALL administrators at Avid Liquid's website! And there is very little critisicm at Avid Liquid's website because the moderators admitted to me that they will censor posts if they contain discrediting information.
I have made two 1 hour dvd's (currently on Amazon) and I have been able to get excellent results. That being said, the headaches and bug workaround compell to never recommend Liquid to anyone. You need to run far away.
It's true that if you buy the above product, you will not be able to properly output a dvd unless you download the patch (called 7.2 update). And technically the closest timeline to DVD that liquid offers is 720x486 (which is NOT DVD or even MiniDv)
People who are unbiased will rate Liquid overall as dead last. You are better of with Vegas or Premiere if you use an IBM. For macintosh, FCP obviously.
I want to love Liquid because it is technically very powerful, but every upgrade will fix some bugs, yet introduce more.

Use caution when ordering this productJul 10, 2006 The program could be very good if some of the bugs were fixed in it. If you plan on doing short productions then this program would be okay but if you are wanting do long extensive video capturing I would look for something else.

Liquid, for me, was a good choiceJun 03, 2006 Before buying Liquid 7, I read the Avid forum and asked questions. I knew there were problems at that time (in February - around the time of the first review below). My decision to purchase was based on the number of things I could do with it which far exceeded what I could with any other editor I had been using, including Premiere Pro 2 which I had just purchased. Had I known about Liquid 7 before purchasing Prem Pro 2, I would certainly not have purchased Prem Pro 2. I haven't used it since I got Liquid 7.
The first review complained about service pack 1. By the time I got Liquid in early March, service pack 2 was out. That's the version I started with. Yes, there were still problems with DVD output but that did not mean that DVDs couldn't be made. I've made numerous DVDs with 7.0 SP2 and 7.1 (Version 7.1 is now available). The realtime abilities of this editor are incredible. Those features alone have saved me countless hours of rendering. I've made 1-hr. DVDs with Liquid 7 in less than 20 minutes. That's including render time and burn time. I could never do this with any other editor/DVD authoring package.
I would have given Liquid a 5-star rating except for the initial problems I saw. With the recent updates which have fixed most of the early problems, it's closer to a 4.5-star rating and moving on to a 5-star product. I don't say that about many things.

Liquid defines the future of editingMay 31, 2006 I will start this review by admiting I am a long time user and supporter of Liquid. I also agree that the initial release of Avid Liquid was seriously flawed but Avid is taking steps to reslove all the issues with the program and has a firm committment to its's success.
Most of the issues that were a problem in the initial release have been fixed with the 7.1 update and a new update which is due out soon will fix almost all the remaining problems especially the DVD issues.
No other program at the price, or even for more dollars, has the breath of features found in Liquid. From realtime effects filters, to SmartSound, to audio editing, to an array of output options including DVD, DivX, Mpeg, AVI, Quicktime, etc., nothing comes close for the money. And while the DVD feature has been problamatic, Liquid's ability to author and burn DVD's without having to use an external program is a real timesaver and it will work as designed in very short order. Even as it exists at the time I am writing this, it works fairly well for most users.
Also, Liquid is one of the very few products on the market that allow you to work with HDV footage from the new HDV camcorders in the native Mpeg format those camera output so no transcoding is required and you can mix any format of video on your timeline, a great feature.
There are some things to know about Liquid. It does require certain hardware to run correctly and you need to read the system requirements before buying the product. A DirectX 9 compliant video card is a must. A fast processor is a must. An ASIO2 compliant audio card like the SB Audigy 2 is a good idea. With the right hardware, Liquid rocks. If you buy the Pro version with the breakout box you get the ability to directly interface a broadcast video recorder such as a BetaSP deck. I do that and edit nationally syndicated television programs that run on hundreds of stations with Avid Liquid. So, like everything else, there will always be those who are negative about something. But I can tell you from real experience that Liquid is an incredible product and if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the fact that other products are copying Liquid's all in one approach should tell you why Liquid defines the future of editing.

Avid Liquid Exceeds My NeedsMay 31, 2006 I have been editing video for nearly 10 years, starting with Pinnacle StudioDV, progressing up through the Pinnacle DV500 (with Adobe Premiere) and finally to the Liquid family of products, I feel that my abilities (as an editor) have grown as I advanced my technological infrastructure and and upgrading from Pinnacle Liquid Edition to Avid Liquid was no exception.
I have to admit that the initial release of Liquid 7.0 by Avid was a misstep, they were extremely quick to remedy the situation with a Service Pack 1 which was soon followed by the (very stable) release of Liquid 7.1.
What sold me on Liquid was it's INSTANT SAVE feature. Thirty times every second your project is saved. In the likelihood your PC crashes (and they all do), as soon as you reboot your system and launch Liquid, you'll be amazed to see your project, perfectly intact - just the way it was when your PC crashed. That single feature alone is worth the price of admission! Add to that a simply brilliant multicam function that allows you to seamlessly edit between 16 different video sources, background rendering, professional color correction, dynamic time-warping (slo-mo/fast-mo) plus a ton of REAL TIME special effects, Avid Liquid is (by far) the most product you can get, for the money.
Avid Liquid was made for the Wedding and Event videographer. It's interface, while not initially intuitive, is easily understood and navigable within a weekend. And with a plethora of independent video-based tutorials and instructional books on the market, anyone can become a master of this superior NLE within a month.
Perhaps the biggest assets of using this product is its intensely loyal and growing user community. While telephone technical support could stand some improvement (and what software company can't), online forum's dedicated to Liquid is the fastest and most direct way of getting answers to your questions.
Regardless of whether you are new to editing or a seasoned professional, Avid Liquid 7.1 (and beyond) is designed to make your editing tasks efficient, accurate and a whole lot of fun.
