Description:

PYRO Drive Kit has two 1394 ports for maximum flexibility in your FireWire topology. 1394 bus power is supplied through the port for a bus-powered drive (or other devices). The secret ingredient that converts your IDE into a FireWire Drive is the PYRO Native Bridge board. This board comes pre-installed in your PYRO Drive Kit. The PYRO Native Bridge board is 1394a-compliant and supports 1394 bus speeds of 100, 200 and 400 Mega bits per second. The PYRO 2.5" Drive Kit will help you maximize the data throughput of your drive. Data Burst speeds of up to 400 Mbps (50MB/sec) are supported by the 1394 technology. Sustained transfer rates of over 16MB/sec. have been achieved with hard drives in the testing labs. Digital Video only requires 3.9 MB/sec. so you have lots of SPEED left over for other tasks. With the PYRO 1394 2.5" Drive Kit it's never been easier to add storage to your computer or network server. Just install your drive and connect. You can easily connect one drive to the next. There are no terminators or device ID's to worry about, FireWire does all of that for you automatically. Want to add a drive to your computer, just plug it in. No re-booting required. Want to remove a drive, just let your operating system know that you are removing a drive and unplug. This is so easy? you're going to fall in love with your computer all over again. No bravery required. Adding a hard drive to a computer used to be one of the more scary things in life. But not with the PYRO 2.5" Drive Kit. To install a new drive all you do is install your drive into the enclosure, bolt it down to the enclosure with the included mounting screws, close the case and connect it to your 1394 card. It can't get much easier than this. If you are good with Lego's or Lincoln logs, you'll be an expert at this. Available USB port is required for notebook computers with 4-pin IEEE 1394 port.

5ADS Pyro Firewire EnclosureApr 14, 2003
On the contrary, this enclosure works flawlessly with both a desktop and notebook (requires USB power boost) with an IBM 20MB 2.5" drive. People are often too quick to pan newly-installed products when what they really have are underlying system glitches.

1No good. Lost all my data. Flaky interface.Feb 20, 2003
I have my old income tax data in another notebook drive from back when I had another notebook. This year, I decided not to swap drives in order to do my income taxes.

The Pyro 2.5" Drive Kit (1394 interface) was the first solution I tried. Installation is easy and the whole thing was well made.

I was using a PCMCIA 1394 adaptor which didn't provide the power supply to the 1394 bus. So I used the cable provided by ADS that tapped power from the USB port. The first problem I encountered was that the USB ports on my notebook did not provide enough power for the hard drive.

I dug up a desktop with a USB port and used that as a power source.

Then the second problem : while accessing the drive, the system would hang or freeze for long periods of time. It was as if there was a communication problem between the notebook PCMCIA adaptor and the external drive.

The last straw occurred when I shutdown the system and then ran scandisk on the external drive : all my data disappeared!

I went out today and got a similar product by CompuCable instead and am now running scandisk again. This second solution (although not as well made) appears to be a lot more stable and does not hang or freeze during accesses to the external drive.
